This week’s DIY was inspired by a Moschino safety pin embellished jacket. Safety pins are coming back this season and being used in detailing as well as jewelry.
You will need the following items for this project:
- A Collarless Sweater or Jacket (you can find some really cool ones at a vintage store)
-1 1/2″ Gold Safety Pins (adjust size based on with of your collar)
To Get Started:
Simply take your first safety pin and fasten it head up vertically alongside the collar. The evenly space out your second safety pin and secure it next to the first. We spaced ours out according to the knit “ribbed” texture of the sweater. Continue securing the pins until you have five. Then take a safety pin and place it horizontally at the top, securing it through the vertical pins. Take a second safety pin and place it horizontally at the bottom, securing it through the vertical pins. This should create a “woven” pattern.
Once you have completed your first set. Repeat the above steps until your collar is complete.
Use the same pattern to embellish the pockets. Feel free to add more or less detail to your project! The ideas are limitless!

Originally planned as a re-release of her worldwide smash, debut album, “the fame,” Gaga decided to scrap those plans and release it as her sophomore release. She also decided to capitalize on her die-hard fans by releasing “The fame monster,” along with her debut and a deluxe edition that contains a lock of her hair. The out of the world context of the fact that she is giving away locks of her hair showcases exactly how out of the world the material on, “the Fame Monster,” really is. Although the album is only 8 song long, Gaga makes sure that they are the best 8 songs she has ever written. There is not one song on this release that you can find fault with. For half of the album, you find gaga hooking up with the man behind some of “the Fame’s” biggest hits, Redone. For example, the lead single, “bad romance,” which finds gaga making a reference to Alfred Hitchcock films. (I want your psycho, your vertigo shtick, want you in my rear window baby your sick). Next, is the “La Isla Bonita,” sounding “Alejandro,” which chorus is so catchy you’ll find yourself singing “Ale Alejandro,” all day. The other half of the album find gaga working with some of the most genius pop producers such as Fernando Garibay who is responsible for the album’s best track, “Dance in the Dark,” which contains a vogue style breakdown giving shout-outs to Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana, and Jean Benet Ramsey. Other highlights include the Darkchild produced, “Telephone,” which features Beyonce, and the albums only ballad, “speechless,” which is a tribute to her father, but is sung as it were coming from her mother. So, even though the album may be only 8 songs long, the idea to take away from it, is Quality definitely outweighs Quantity.

Embellishment is a key trend for this coming season. Some say Prada set the trend for Spring 2010 sending models down the runway wearing crystal pieces on everything from tops, to shoes, to bags. Several other designers caught on to this trend experimenting with everything from jewels to metal pieces. Isolating the tend to a certain area like the shoulder or neckline creates a lot of interest and instantly dresses up any outfit. Embellishment is a great trend for those who don’t have time or money in today’s economy to worry about jewelry!

This weeks DIY actually came from one of my favorite blogs, Chicsteals. The Cutout Skull T-Shirt is a super easy way to take an old white t to an edgier level.
You will need the following items for this project:
- an oversized light or tissue weight t-shirt or tunic
- a pencil or fabric pen
-skull pattern printed on two 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper (provided below)
To get started:
Right click and save the two images above for the skull pattern. Print them on two 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper. Then tape them together so that the teeth fit together. Once you have done this turn your t-shirt inside out and place it on a table front side down. Now you are ready to insert your skull pattern inside the t-shirt making sure it is centered.
Now taking a pencil or fabric marker, trace your pattern.
Once you are complete, take your scissors and carefully trim out the details from your skull pattern. Finally turn your t-shirt right side out and you have your very own cutout skull T-shirt!! You can get creative and pair it with colored, striped, or patterned tees! Remember you don’t have to limit yourself to just the skull pattern. Have fun and come up with you own patterns too! (Tip: try getting ideas from pumpkin carving patterns)

About damn time!!!! The world has been eagerly awaiting the debut release from Chicago rapper Kid Sister since early 2008, and after a year and a half of album delays (that’s probably more than ‘Lil Wayne’s album has been pushed back) we finally have “Ultraviolet.” After listening to it, all I can say is it was definitely worth the wait. Ultraviolet contains 12 tracks that are so flawless you can ‘t find one your not swaying your body to, or tapping your foot to the beat. Not to mention that the hooks are so catchy you cannot help but sing your heart out to them. Chicago is the hometown of some of the industry’s best rappers. For instance, Kanye West, who appears on one the album’s many standout tracks, “Pro nails.” Many of the albums songs have the same theme of trying to her nails and weave to match her outfits before heading to the club. Other album Standout tracks include: “Step,” which, has an appearance from Uk’s Estelle, the albums first official single and album opener, “Right Hand Hi,” “Daydreaming,” which, if the album had any mid-tempo songs, this would probably be the closest to, “54321,” and “Get Fresh.” This album is recommended to anyone who wants a little bit of chi-city’s Hip-hop/house flavor added to any collection, and that is a must!

I remember when jelly shoes were popular. I thought it was super chic to sport the toddler shoe with my trendy grunge look (think Courtney Love circa 1994). Well they are back and making a huge hit for Spring/Summer 2010! Although like most of the resurrected 90’s trends, they have grown up a bit. Melissa shoes and Vivian Westwood have teamed up to bring us a variety of jelly delights ranging from heels to even booties! Marc Jacobs even featured his version of the more classic jelly but added a huge velvet platform. So bust out your band-aids its gonna be a blistery summer!

I really love the new purple and burgundy colors that designers like Coach, Prada, and Gucci are releasing for the fall/winter 2009 season. The only thing keeping me from buying these beautiful bags is will the color limit me when pairing them with different outfits, or can I get away with wearing them with pretty much everything in my fall/winter wardrobe. Thanks for your help!
Sincerely,
Lea from Harrisburg, PA
Dear Lea,
Purple Reigns for Fall/Winter 2009! Deep purples and burgundy are key for the season. It is a very easy color to wear and goes with so much. For a no brain-er, try pairing it with neutrals to give a pop of color. We love paring it with other shades purples and even blues. It looks great with greys, and if you are feeling a bit bold try it with reds and oranges. Purple is the new black. In my opinion, purchasing the new bag would be a great investment. The best news is that purple will continue for Spring/Summer’10, in a lighter form. So paring that deeper darker purple with the light airy ones spring will bring will be an amazing contrast!
