Music We Love: Delphic- Counterpoint

Artist: Delphic

Album: Acolyte

Available: Amazon

Delphic+11

Hailing from Manchester, UK, Delphic is set to release their long awaited debut album, Acolyte, January 11, 2010.  With the release of single Counterpoint this past April and This Momentary (releases through Kitsune), the band has already created quite the fan base, being compared to the Nu Rave kings, Klaxons.  In a recent interview from Sandman Magazine, the band stated that they don’t like to be associated with the “nu” category, as they are not striving to be something that already exists.  Delphic simply focuses on the music, and are themselves.  Acolyte delivers the whole way through with flowing electronic beats and dreamy vocals.  We think Delphic will attract fans of Friendly Fires, and will be a definite contender for 2010 album of the year!

Trend Alert: Blow On Girl!

We got a chuckle when we found out that the rave whistle is making a comeback!  The whistles were seen on the Missoni Spring/Summer’10 runway where the models resembles something of a  Nomad meets Ibiza ”It” girl.  They were attached to rather delicate ladylike necklaces, giving the once underground must have accessory a more sophisticated grown-up feel (as much as a rave whistle can).  These bad boys are set to make a comeback.  That being said lets hope pacifiers and glow sticks are buried in the past!

Ask The Stylist:

Dear Stylist,

I have noticed for a little while now that tie dye is a pretty big fashion trend.  I really like the throwback to the 1960’s but don’t want to look like a hippie.  Help me figure out how i can wear tie dye pieces in a more current modern way!

Amie from Houston

Amie,
Tie Dye is a fun trend, and we will continue to see it through to Summer 2010 with such designers as Proenza Schouler, Blumarine, and Rodarte.  The key to pulling off tie dye is to first and foremost, like most trends, use it in moderation.  Tie dye jeans and/or leggings are a great simple way to start.  Pairing them with a simple t-shirt and boyfriend blazer is a super chic way to master the trend.  An oversized sweater or tunic is a great alternative as well.  Another great way to wear this trend is to pair it with unexpected items.  We recently saw an article in Lucky Magazine  that we loved pairing tie dye t-shirts with classic box jackets!  Two completely opposite looks that look incredible when paired together.  Most importantly, if you look like you are getting ready to travel with the Dead, minimalize the look, and keep it simple!

Music We Love: Beach House- Norway

Artist: Beach House

Album: Teen Dream

Available: Amazon(pre-order)

beach_house_new

Currently on tour with Grizzly Bear, Victoria Legrand and Alex Scully, better known as Beach House are set to release their third album January 25th.  Hailing from Maryland the duo holed themselves up in an upstate New York church where they recorded Teen Dream with producer Chris Coady.  The album is eerily haunting and has a constant hum of synths and guitars.  Legrands androgynous vocals moan in perfect tune to the overwhelming piano chords and spiralling crescendos specifically in Norway.  The album is very consistent and with only 10 tracks hold our interest til the end.  Teen Dream is the perfect album to set the mood to a mellow evening.

Trend Alert: The Peplum

Once popular in the 1940’s and again in the 80’s, the peplum dress is making its way back for 2010.  The peplum is defined as a ruffle or short skirt attached at the waistline of a skirt, dress, or jacket.  This trend is one that looks amazing on all body types.  It is fitted through the middle and draws all focus to the hip, creating a small nipped in waistline.  And for those that are already equipped with curves, the peplum can conceal your hip area!  Peplem dresses will be a no brainer for spring/summer 2010.

Ask The Stylist:

Dear Stylist,

I love leggings!  More specific I love the faux leather leggings that have been around for a few seasons.  My problem is i don’t know how to wear them with out looking gothic!  HELP!

Mary K

Boston, MA

Mary,
We love our leggings too!  They are a easy alternative to pants and great way to stay warm during the chilly months.  Leather or leather-like leggings are such an edgy ways to put a spin on it.  As a rule of thumb leggings should be paired with a slightly longer or tunic top.  You never want to look like you have on a top and tights.  We like pairing leather leggings with minimalistic micro mini dresses and boyfriend blazers for a more of a modern laid back look.  With such a bold statement piece, you want to tone down the rest of your outfit and find a happy balance.  Unless you are rocking out at the Viper Room, keep it clean and simple!

Music We Love: Yeasayer- Ambling Alp

Artist: Yeasayer

Album: Odd Blood

Available: Amazon (pre order)

 yeasayer452

It has been released that Yeasayer will release their sophomore album, “Odd Blood”, February 9th in the US.  We are fortunate enough to get a preview of what the album has in store.  Odd Blood opens up with “Children”, the bizarre beat and muffled vocals remind us of Marjory the Trash Heap from Fraggle Rock.  The album continues with more classic Yeasayer tunes.  The single “Ambling Alp” has more of a pop feel compared to the more psychedelic “All Hour Cymbals”.  Odd Blood packs in some dancier tracks in the middle of the album reminiscent of MGMT, whom the band toured with in 2008.  The end of the album brings us back to the Yeasayer we are used to which is somewhere between shoegaze and psych-folk with hymnal vocals.  “Odd Blood” might just be one of the best albums of 2010!

Trend Alert: Falling Down The Rabbit Hole

It wasn’t  long ago that we saw the bunny vixens strutting down the runways of Louis Vuitton.  I loved the quirky headbands the models sported, but did I actually think this was going to evolve into a trend?!  No way!  Now I stand corrected.  Bunny ears, believe it or not, are hitting the streets as a big accessory trend for 2010.  Delfina Fendi was walking proof as she was spotted in a toned down version on the streets of Paris.  For those of you who may think this trend is a bit costumey or worse yet, ridiculous, try a bow or even a feathered headband to recreate the same concept.

DIY: Lanvin Inspired Hardware Necklace

This week’s DIY comes from a post on Chicsteals.  We are going to re-create a Lanvin “Hardware” Necklace using plumbing parts from a hardware store.

You will need the following items for this project:

- 1 pack of 3/4 x 3/4 straight coupling (5 to a pack)
- 2 packs of 1/2′ compression nuts (3 to a pack)
- 1 pack of 5/8″ compression nuts (3 to a pack)
- 2 yards of satin 5/8″ ribbon
- 2 extra large jumprings (or D-rings)
- 2 12mm jumprings
- large lobster or toggle clasp
- sewing machine or needle and thread

To get started:

Fold the end of the ribbon over the extra large jumpring creating a finished edge and stitch the ribbon in place.

Then begin threading the plumbing pieces onto the necklace using the following pattern:

1 – 3/4 x 3/4 straight coupling
2- 1/2″ compression nuts
1- 3/4 x 3/4 straight coupling
1- 1/2″ compression nuts
3- 5/8″ compression nuts
1- 1/2″ compression nuts
1- 3/4 x 3/4 straight coupling
2- 1/2″ compression nuts
1 – 3/4 x 3/4 straight coupling

Once you are complete, fold the ribbon over the other extra large jumpring and stitch in place.  Next use the 12mm jumprings to attach the lobster or toggle clasp to complete your necklace.
