Trend Alert: Double Trouble

Remember the 80’s when wearing head to toe denim was ultra chic?  Well it has made a comeback!  Double denim, or wearing denim on denim, has been know in the past as a huge fashion faux pas! However it has become trend du jour.  It was on the runways for 2010 and a big hit with celebs!  The key to pulling off the trend is NOT, i repeat NOT wear head to toe denim in the same wash, but instead wear two completely different washes or even colors of denim (ie, black and blue).  If done right rocking double denim can be rather hot!

Ask The Stylist:

Dear Stylist,

I have noticed that tops seem to be getting smaller and smaller.  I love the look of midriffs but i think i am beyond the age to wear them publicly.   Besides my tummy could stand to toned a bit more (c’mon its not bikini season after all).  Is there a way to pull off this look without making people want to point, stare, and laugh?

Geneva

Baltimore, MD

Geneva,
Midriffs have made a comeback.  And a lot of us have negative associations with them.   Once dubbed as trashy or slutty, the midriff or cropped top can be ultra chic when worn the right way.  The key to pulling off the look is to get your proportions right.  The idea is to show some skin without showing too much skin.  We suggest pairing your midriffs with highwaist bottom (skirt or pants).  If your tummy is your somewhat troubled area then wearing high waist will also help conceal.  Another fun but more revealing way to try the trend is to wear a shear layer over your bare mid section creating the illusion of being covered, but still showing off the goods (if you have em). You can also play with the bare midriff trend with cut out dresses.  You’re not exactly showing your yummy but flashes of sides instead.  Whatever the case, you need to wear this trend with confidence!  The last thing you want to do is stand around all evening with your arms strategically covering your belly.

Music We Love: Chew Lips- Play Together

Artist: Chew Lips

Album: Unicorn

Available: Amazon

ChewLips

Chew Lips is an electronica trio based out of London. The trio was first introduced as an Ellemm favorite on our Music We love Vol. 1   play list we featured this past summer. Six months later we have their album, “Unicorn,” Which features, one of the most bright and vibrant album cover of the decade. Plus, they’ve got a great effort to match.  The album’s lead single, “Play Together,” features a pulsating beat over a vintage synth, all over the emotional vocal styling of lead singer, Tigs.  Other highlights from “Unicorn,” include the sweet and catchy tone of “Gold Key,” and the emotional and powerful “Too Much Talking.” The album is definitely not shy of immaculate songwriting and a sleek technique when it comes down to their songwriting.  “Unicorn may only be ten tracks long but it doesn’t skimp on any tracks. While 2009 gave us the electronic queens Little Boots and La Roux, 2010 hands down goes to Chew Lips.

Trend Alert: Sans Pants

Hot pants are making their way into Spring/Summer 2010.  Made extremely popular by a gal we refer to as Gaga, hot pants are creeping even higher giving the appearance of wearing NO PANTS?!?!  We are seeing a few different versions of the pants (or lack of them).  Mid cut (which start right below the belly button), high-waisted (which is the most popular), and body suits (once used as a layering piece, now worn alone).  The key to successfully pulling off this trend is to make sure the cut of the hot pants curve around your outer thigh and cover your rear.  Wear heels with hot pants to create a slimmer line and show off your legs!  Since a lot is already exposed try pairing them with a billowy top or a boyfriend blazer.  For those that want to start experimenting now, pair them with tights or stockings during the cooler months.  Like the trend but don’t think you can pull it off?  As an alternative try the same look with  boy shorts (which are slightly longer) or tap pants (which are looser).

Trend Alert: Pretty In Pastel

Pastels are key colors for Spring  2010.  The yummy sorbet colors are being worn head to toe this coming season.  The yummy shades give an instant soft feminine feel and flatter any skin tone.  The pastel trend is a great refreshing re-vamp to our wardrobes after a long season of black, rocker goth glam. The sorbet hues are a very sophisticated way to spruce up a rather drab muted wardrobe for now.  Try adding a pastel scarf or jacket for now and by Spring you will be in bloom wearing the head to toe trend!

Ask The Stylist:

Dear Stylist:

I have noticed that mix matching prints is a big trend now.  I love the way it looks and envy the people who sport it.  How can i pull off this trend without looking like a crazy bag lady who got dressed in the dark?  Help!

 ”Wants to be Eclectic”

Austin, TX

“Eclectic”,

You are right!  Mixing prints are going to be big this year, especially with patterned pants being a key trend.  However, we do not advise you to close your eyes and pull random items out of your closet.  There actually is effort and planning that go into the haphazard look.  For someone like yourself that may be new to mix-matching, start with a key common color.  Then when pulling patterns with same color, make sure the pattern size balances out.  For example if you have a skirt with a larger print, pair it with a smaller print top.  You don’t want to look like a walking optical illusion!  Stick with two prints in the beginning, then once you feel a bit more comfortable, try adding a jacket, scarf, or accessory that incorporates not only your common color but pops of other colors.  Experiment and have fun!

Music We Love: Vampire Weekend- Cousins

Artist: Vampire Weekend

Album: Contra

Available: Amazon

Vampire-Weekend-Announce-New-Album-Contra

They’re back!!!  Its been over a year since the release of their self titled debut album and finally Vampire Weekend will release their sophomore album, “Contra” January 12.  The Ivy League boys came came back this time mixing synth and electro beats with hip hop, reggae tones and ska-punk.  Expect fewer guitars and much heavier drums.  “Diplomat’s Son” reminds us of a M.I.A sampled calypso influenced song, while “Giving Up  The Gun” has more a synth rock sound reminiscent of bands like The Bravery.  The album ends with “I Think Ur A Contra” a more mellow tune with  boyish falsetto lyrics.  Contra is a clever witty album that blends different genres so naturally.  It is a step away from their debut album, and we think a good change!
