Captured by the studded trend and lusting over a comfy pair of moccasins from Urban Outfitters, our inspiration for this weeks DIY was born!
You will need the following items for this project:
- A pair of moccasins (if you want a real DIY challenge, you can make your own moccasins using a kit from your local craft store or from Tandy Leather Factory)
- 5 packs of 3/8″ pyramid studs (30 to a pack)
- pair of pliers
To get started:
Puncture the studs through the moccasin one by one using the pattern below:
Make sure as each stud is pierced you take the pliers and bend the prongs back, securing them in place. Repeat this process for each stud. Once your pattern is complete you are ready to wear your studded moccasins.
**Note we decided after this DIY was complete, that it need more, so we continued adding the studs around the top sides of the moccasins, you can opt to add this on your project or not!**
Moccasins are a size Medium (7/8)

If it’s not obvious by now any reader of the blog can tell that Ellemm is involved in a love affair with British bands, and its been going on for quite some time now. We have blogged about just about every band and singer you can think of. So, there is no surprise why we love the Scanners. The band formed in London, England, back in 2004 and quickly caught the attention of some very important names in the music industry. The Scanner’s caught the attention of names such as: Steve Aoki, Dj Atrak, and gossip blogger Perez Hilton, raved about them. From there their music was showcased in festivals like South by Southwest and also received airtime on television shows like Entourage. With the new decade passing, we’ve got the sophomore album from the band called, “Submarine.” The albums title suites the overall sound of the album. They really dive into different genres and with each track; you get a little something different. The album’s standout tracks include the cheeky album opener, “Jesus Saves,” The retro rock sounds of “Sick Love,” the flavorful “Half A Mind (Dreamer Forever), which sounds like it would belong on either a Killer’s or Rapture record.

The trench coat is a classic staple that never seems to go out of style. It is the perfect solution to a not so hot but not so cold day. This Spring/Summer 2010 we have seen a new version of the timeless coat…cropped. The cropped trench give a capelike quality making it more modern. For those that opt for a more classic style try one that is belted right at the natural waist, creating instant curves that will flatter any body type. The cropped trench is best worn with a longer top/tunic or kick it up a notch and pair it with worldly embellished pieces.

Yes you heard us right! Overalls are the trend du jour for this Spring/Summer 2010. We couldn’t be more excited. If you ever have worn a pair of these you know just how comfy they are. Now you don’t have to trade your stilettos in and move to a dairy farm to sport them. In fact the seasons best are to be worn anywhere but a farm. Overalls have grown up and matured since elementary school. Many different versions have been seen coming down the runways, from the popular denim, to the coveted leather pair from Chloe, to an evening gown version at Ralph Lauren. Overalls look super chic when paired with a ruffle top or paired with a boyfriend blazer. Don’t forget to finish the look with a pair of sky high stilettos!

Marina and the diamonds is a welsh glam pop band who rose to fame after being feature on BBC’s sound of 2010. The name is actually rooted from her very Greek name. Marina Lambrini Diamandis, which is a Greek, root, word for diamond, and there you have it. Marina rose to commercial success with the release of two indie EP’s and numerous features on Myspace. Now we have the release of their first major label debut album, “The family Jewels.” The album is the perfect blend of pop, rock, dance, and even throws in a little bit of glam. Marina’s tongue and cheek lyrics, catchy melodies, and timeless croons all blended together make for one of the best pop albums of 2010, and one of the hottest artists to watch for the new decade. The album’s highlights include the album’s opener, “Are You Satisfied?” proves that she really doesn’t give a damn and that it’s not her problem. Other album highlights include: the super fun, “Shampains,” the ultra glam, “Hollywood,” the new wave/electro sounding “The Outsider,” and lastly the album’s dance track “Rootless.” Already critics are comparing her to the next Florence & the Machines (Another Ellemm Favorite) and Lily Allen, and with comparisons like that, we definitely think that Marina is one artist to watch in 2010.

Bib necklaces have been a hot item the past few years. In this weeks DIY we will show you how to re-create a tribal bib necklace that was inspired by Fendi.
You will need the following items for this project:
- 1 large piece of black scrap leather (sold in a pack approx. $3.99)
- one 9×12 sheet of black felt
- 2 packs of assorted shaped mirror pieces (we used 1/2″, 3/4″, 1″ square and circle)
-2 Carnelian cabochon stones
-2 Lapis Jasper cabochon stone
- 2 Green Aventurine cabochon stone
- 1 Black Jasper/Malachite rectangle pendent
-1 yard of 5/8″ black satin ribbon
- industrial strength glue
- white marking pencil or chalk
- scissors
To get started:
Map out the pattern for your necklace on the felt (you can be creative and use the same as ours and be creative with your own). Once you have done that, take the marking pencil or chalk and trace around the pattern. Then cut your pattern out. Next glue your stone and/or mirror pieces in place on the felt. Set to dry.
Using the necklace pattern, you will want to trace the same pattern on the leather creating a back supporting piece. After tracing, cut it out. Then you will want to cut your desired length of ribbon to place on either ends of the necklace. Glue the ribbon on the ends of the leather. Next apply a layer of glue on the back of the felt piece and attach the back leather piece. Set to dry and you have your very own bib necklace!

Yes, the world finally got exactly what we have been waiting for, and it seemed to be an eternity. It has been 10 long years since we last heard from Sade. She last dropped the masterpiece, “Lovers Rock,” in 2000, and then kind of disappeared. The word first broke in late 2009 that Sade was gearing up to release a new album, and from that moment on the anticipation soared. Several Months later and the world finally received, “Soldier of Love.” “Soldier,” finds Sade picking up exactly where she left off with “Lovers Rock,” not that there is anything wrong with that since “Lovers Rock,” was one of her best pieces of work. On “Soldier of Love,” you’ll find that She blends together the most beautiful R&B melodies all over such soothing vocals from the lovely Sade. The albums opener, “the moon and The Stars,” has one of the most catchy guitar riffs over a relaxed groove. When listening to the title track, you’ll find that you can’t help but scream the chorus right along with the track. Other album highlights include the reggae inspired, “Babyfather,” the trip hop ecstasy of “Bring Me Home,” and “Skin,” and lastly the album is summed up with one of the most romantic tracks on the entire album, “The safest Place.” To sum it all up “Soldier of Love,” picks up right where Sade left off and let’s just say it was definitely worth the 10-year wait.

Lingerie inspired looks have been around for the long haul, coming in and out of fashion. Its back in many ways for 2010. As we mentioned in earlier posts, high waist knickers, tap shorts, and pajama pants are all key trends that fall into the lingerie category. However, we are seeing a shift in trend from such designers as Marc Jacobs, Christian Dior, and Proenza Schouler. Underwear worn as outerwear? When I saw these looks going down the runway, I immediately remembered the episode of Sex And The City where Carrie was sporting her bra on the outside of her shirt! The key to successfully wearing the trend is to layer the underpinnings over sheer fabrics to maintain the light sexy lingerie effect. If you are a bit to timid to walk around in your skivvies, try pairing a long line bra or bralett under a jacket, or rock a corset dress.

Headbands have been a key accessory trend especially in the past few years. More specifically, the hipster headband, a throwback to the 1960’s hippie headbands. Whether single or multiple bands, the hipster headband is worn lower wrapping around the head, not over it. This weeks DIY is dedicated to showing you how to save money and customize your own at home.
You will need the following items for this project:
- 2 yards of gold braided trim (we used two different types)
- black elastic cord (available in 5 yard packs)
- 1 pack of gold cone beads
- industrial strength glue (we love Amazing E-6000)
-scissors
-measuring tape
To get started:
Measure out the amount of trim and the amout of elastic cord needed to make the headband fit comfortably around your head, giving it a little stretch to make adjustable. One you have cut both the trim and elastic in the appropriate amounts, tie the elastic in a tight secure knot around the end of the trim on one side. Cut off the excess trim and elastic. Then thread the gold cone bead onto the elastic with the larger opening first. Apply a small amount of glue on the end of the gold trim and feed it into the cone bead creating a secure finished end.
Next you will want to take another cone bead and this time thread it onto the elastic with the smaller opening first. Once the bead is on, tie the elastic to the remaining end of the trim. Cut off the excess trim and elastic. To complete your Hipster Headband, apply a small amount of glue on the end of the gold trim and feed it into the cone bead creating a secure finished end on the other side.
