On July 17, we had our first fashion show at Dharma LoungeNiche Market our models walked to a live set by the Cement Stars. A big thanks to our host Craig Brandon Stephenson, Orange Olive Hair Gallery, Cirrus Salon, and Jennie Huerta for making it all possible. If you missed this one, stay tuned for the next!
Part Royksopp, part Bloc Party would be the best way to describe the newest band to top our Music We Love. Naomi is an electronica band that originates from Germany. The duo met in 1996 and has been putting out album after album in their native country. Their latest album, “The Big Shapes,” is a blend of poppy hooks, dancey bass lines, and the chill pipes from the front man. The album opens with the albums catchiest song, “Dragon Tree,” (Everybody knows your playing for keeps/ everybody knows that mountain is steep) which has a hook that you can’t help but sing along to by the end of the song. “First Things First,” easily could have found a home on Royksopp’s last record. “Candy Floss,” hands down is the albums shining moment, and is pop perfection to a ‘t’. Other album favorites include: The chilling “Fujiyama,” “Note We Never Play,” and the vocoder happy “I’ll Be The Past,” which is very reminiscent of Imogen Heap’s blockbuster “Hide and Seek.”

We got a sneak peek of the sweatshirt trend this spring as a staple player in the Sporty trend du jour paired with leather shorts. For Fall/Winter 2010 we will see sweatshirts being paired with posh ladylike skirts and ultra feminine accessories. Make sure the sweatshirt is fitted and for an effortlessly chic look, pair it with soft romantic bottoms.

Nautical was the theme for Louis Vuitton’s 2010 Cruise Collection and also a key trend for summer. So naturally we couldn’t help but fall in love with their Shine Bracelets. But with the accessories setting us back over $2000, who has money to go on a cruise? Instead, DIY.
You will need :
Wooden bangles (unpainted)
Acrylic Paint (colors of your choice)
Paint brush
3 yards of ¼” drapery rope in ivory or off white
2 pks of 24 brass or gold drapery tacks (we used 16 per bracelet)
Flat nose pliers
Industrial strength glue (we love E-600, in every craft store)
Spray acrylic gloss
Drill
To get started:
Apply two coats of acrylic paint letting each coat dry before applying the next. Once both coats have completely dried then spray a coat of gloss making sure it is evenly applied. Let coat dry and repeat. After your gloss sets use smallest bit and drill a hole on either side of the cuff for the drapery tack to later be placed. We recommend marking where you want to drill to ensure the tacks are evenly placed.
Next, cut your rope in half creating two equal pieces for each bracelet. Using the glue, paint a coat on the end of the rope creating a seal to prevent unraveling. Begin wrapping the rope around the bracelet covering your drilled holes, using a little bit of glue to secure the rope as you go. Once you finish wrapping, cut the excess rope off again painting glue on the end to create a seal. Attach the two ends together on the inside using a layer of glue. Let dry.
After your glue has hardened cut the ends down on your drapery tacks using the flat nose pliers, then place tacks around the top and bottom of the bracelet where you drilled your holes. (Optional: dip your tacks in glue before inserting for extra security.)

Kele is the latest front man to go solo this year. It seems that everyone is taking a break, in between albums, for their lead singer to go solo. The latest band to do so is the British group Bloc Party. On his debut effort, “The Boxer,” Kele doesn’t stray too far from Bloc Party’s signature alternative/electronica sound, all mixed together with that unmistakable accent. On the Lead Single, “Tenderoni,” Kele channels his inner Michael Jackson with the title alone and the falsetto friendly chorus, (So You don’t know/you are more than this/you were born for greatness). Other album highlights include the trip-hop happy, “On The Lam,” the album’s brightest moments are easily a tie. The two winners come from the heart wrenching, “Everything You wanted,” and “Unholy Thoughts,” which sounds like the love child of Depeche mode meets Joy Division. Overall, if you are a Bloc Party fanatic you will easily embrace the album, while you wait on the guys to pen their next album.

Leopard prints are forever in and out of style. We saw a major influence in 2009, with the edgy rock ‘n roll trends, and the coveted vintage leopard coat ( Winter ‘09). As we progressed to Spring of 2010 we saw leopard used in neon variations from dresses to accessories. Having great staying power, leopard print is sticking around for the fall. We have seen the print on everything from dresses to yummy booties and gold leopard animal cuffs. To give it a fresh look for the up coming season, we love incorporating the print with decadent gold lame or opalescent brocade. For the unexpected kitschy twist we love pairing leopard with black and white polka dots!

We are super excited to see a revival of the 1990’s grunge trend! Flash back to all things Seattle, Kurt Cobain, granny florals, and flannels. With the return of grunge comes the combat boot! This tough ass kicking shoe was originally meant to be worn by those with military/government professions. In the past we have adapted them into our wardrobe ans they are back again for late summer/early fall. Wear them with sweet floral dresses and cut off shorts in summer for ultimate edginess, and then pair them with leggings or skinnies, and an oversized boyfriend blazer for an unexpected twist in fall.

Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A. reached critically acclaimed status upon the release of her sophomore album, “Kala.” She worked with the producer of the moment, “Timbaland,” caught the eyes of Jay-Z who used her song as the hook to his 2008 anthem, “Swagga Like Us,” and her song “Paper Airplanes,” was used as the theme for the hit comedy “Pineapple Express.” After having a kid (We all recall her 2009 Grammy performance) and taking some time off, she comes back madder than ever, with her new album /\/\/\Y/\ (Pronounced Maya). /\/\/\Y/\ finds M.I.A. causing controversy with the video for the buzz single, “Born Free,” and talking about her frustration with politics. She worked with long time producers Diplo and Switch, Blaqstarr, and worked with dub step producer Rusko. Albums highlights include the first official single, “XXXO,” which is dub step at its finest, the very political, “Lovalot,” (They told me this was a free country, and now it feels like a chicken factory). Other album highlights include, “Born Free,” “It Iz What It Iz,” and second single “Tell Me Why.” Ultimately, M.I.A. wants you to use your minds with this album, from the political content of most of the tracks all the way down to the albums confusing album title.

If there is one thing we recommend investing in, its handbags! They are a staple that manage to continuously rotate through multiple season’s trends. Case in point, classic bags are back in for fall. Designers are recreating their classic styles ranging from the 1930’s to the 1990’s. From the coveted Birkin to Louis Vuitton’s Speedy bag. Shorter handles and luxurious exotic skins seem to be the common denominator in the must have nouveau classics. The bags will pair well with this season librarian trend and minimalist structured suits.

After two decades of dominating the charts and selling nearly 60 million albums, outside of the US, Kylie Minogue is once again trying to break into the US Market. She dominated US Venues in the fall of 2009 after embarking on her first ever US Tour. Her next step was obvious to anyone, release one of the years best dance record. Minogue capitalized on Lady Gaga and David Guetta’s success stateside as a sign that the timing has finally come. ‘Aphrodite,’ finds Kylie returning to her sound made famous on the “Fever,” and “Light Years,” albums. When fans found out, via Twitter, that Kylie worked with Stuart Price (The man Responsible for Madonna’s “Confession on a dance floor” album), the anticipation was on. The ending result is another classic from the Queen of Pop! The albums first single, “All The Lovers,” was released in time to dominate clubs across the globe and own the title as the summer anthem of 2010. Other album favorites include: “Get Outta My Way,” a song that was originally penned for Britney’s new album, “Put Your Hands Up (If You feel Love)” which is a song that could have easily found a home on her sister’s album, circa “Neon Nights.” Two More Dance floor anthems include, “Cupid Boy,” and “Too Much.” Ultimately, if American’s can’t love the genius behind “Aphrodite,” then F*ck them, the rest of the world will.
